I read somewhere that even if you are greeting someone on the phone who has called in you should be smiling. Of course they can't see you but somehow it does seem to impact your friendliness in your voice. I 've done this now for many years and it really does seem to make difference to how people calling in respond to me.

Body language, tone of voice and professional dress all important

start with a smile good eye contact

words not as important as above items

 Never start with questions like:
Can I help you?
what you looking for today?
my name is blank just let know when you see something.

Better questions
welcome we are glad to have here today. which dept would you like to look at today?

Welcome thanks for coming in today. what dept can I point toward today?

I want the customer to relax and think they going to be able to shop by thier self.
My goal is to learn about the customer's home, famliy, occupation

well put. i think the most important thing is to be sincerer. Do not force a greeting because if you don't mean it the customer can and in some cases trust is already lost between you and the customer. But most importantly avoid ye/no greetings, make sure meaningful conversation can take place. even if they are just looking tell them something about the store that can help them so trust is gained

THE 1ST THING I LOOK AT IS THEIR LICENSE PLATE ON THEIR CAR TO SEE IF THEY ARE FROM OUT OF TOWN OR IF THEY HAVE A VANITY PLATE I CAN TALK ABOUT.
